![]() ![]() Dumbo octopi don’t have to worry about many natural predators. There’s an advantage to living on the ocean floor. Since food sources are scarce at the depths Dumbo octopi live, the creatures aren’t picky about what they eat. Using its eight tentacled arms, the octopus sweeps the area around it, looking for prey. When a Dumbo octopus feeds, it glides above the seabed. It dramatically limits what a Dumbo octopus has to dine on. The water is dark and freezing at these depths, and the pressure is too great for most other life forms to survive. The sea creatures are found at depths ranging from 9,800 ft to 23,000 ft. What Does a Dumbo Octopus Eat?Ī Dumbo octopus lives in a harsh environment. It’s these ear-shaped fins that give these creatures their name.Įven though a Dumbo octopus does have a unique appearance, its diet is still similar to other octopi types. Like their Disney namesake, a Dumbo octopus has large fins protruding from both sides of its mantle. Credit: NOAA Ocean Exploration & Research While it has eight arms beneath its mantle like other octopus species, it’s what’s above that makes it so attractive. “These discoveries are important because they make people think about what’s going on just beneath the surface of the water. The Dumbo octopus is a unique creature. “We know so little about the capabilities of marine animals,” Dr. Gloomy octopuses can now be added to this list. ![]() Animals ranging from elephants to antlions throw things, but only some social mammals - including, of course, humans - aim at members of the same species. That these octopuses apparently throw projectiles at each other puts them in an exclusive group. “They had dens right next to each other,” he said, “and I think they didn’t like to be in each other’s faces as much as they were.” ![]() The victim eventually started defending itself, by either raising an arm or ducking in anticipation of a throw, but it never returned fire. In these two cases, one octopus landed “hit after hit after hit” on another, Dr. Some of the clearest evidence for octopus-on-octopus attacks came from two observations of repeat offending by a single individual. “But we were seeing it reasonably often.” It is typically filled with minced or diced octopus, tempura scraps ( tenkasu ), pickled ginger, and green onion. Takoyaki is a ball-shaped snack made of a wheat flour -based batter and cooked in a special takoyaki pan. Throwing was “not at all routine,” said Peter Godfrey-Smith, a philosopher of science at the University of Sydney in Australia and an author of the study. Octopus is a common ingredient in Japanese cuisine, including sushi, takoyaki and akashiyaki. Researchers observed this ballistic behavior while poring over more than 21 hours of video taken near octopus dens. And that exasperation can lead to the deployment of projectiles as a potential manner of cephalopod conflict resolution. Ideal denning conditions and abundant food attract the antisocial animals and force them into close quarters, where it’s common for them to poke, prod, grab and otherwise annoy one another. But in Jervis Bay, Australia, unusually large numbers of one species - Octopus tetricus, better known as the gloomy octopus - gather at sites affectionately nicknamed Octopolis and Octlantis. While octopuses are intelligent, most species live largely solitary lives. It’s a rare behavior in the animal kingdom, and the study is the first time it has been documented in octopuses. A study published on Wednesday in the journal PLOS ONE shows that octopuses of at least one species throw silt and shells, sometimes at one another. It turns out that the urge to hurl something at an irritating neighbor is not confined to land animals. ![]()
